Statistics on Patent Applications Received by the Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (TIPO) in 2023

In 2023, the TIPO received a total of 72,607 patent applications for invention, utility model, and design, marking an increase of 1% compared with the previous year. The number of invention patent applications (50,854) increased by 1% compared with the previous year and reached a new 11-year high. The number of invention patent applications filed by non-resident applicants was 31,220, the highest in history and marking an increase of 1% compared with the previous year. The number of utility model patent applications filed by non-resident applicants was 1,157, marking an increase of 17% compared with the previous year. The number of design patent applications filed by non-resident applicants was 3,850, marking an increase of 3% compared with the previous year.

The top five countries or regions of non-resident applicants were Japan (13,504 applications), marking an increase of 3% compared with the previous year, followed by the United States of America (7,647 applications), the People’s Republic of China (5,002 applications), South Korea (3,299 applications) and Germany (1,198 applications). In terms of patent types, applicants from Japan filed the most invention patent applications and design patent applications, and applicants from the People’s Republic of China filed the most utility model patent applications.
